Field Trip Friday with Julie from Lilacs & Longhorns

November 1, 2013 By Meegan 6 Comments

It’s time for Field Trip Friday with Julie from Lilacs & Longhorns.  You will love her taste, style and her blog!  Not to mention she is one of the nicest people I know.   Take it away Julie!

Hi, I’m Julie from the blog, Lilacs & Longhorns.

I’m so happy to be here at Meegan’s sharing my home tour today!

When Meegan asked me to take you on a tour of my home it was a no-brainer. Meegan is so sweet and creative and I love her blog!

I’m thrilled to invite you in — welcome to my home!

You’ll find that our house is a mix of styles.

I like traditional and cottage/farmhouse with a little bit of French country thrown in. My husband is Texan all the way. He loves leather, cowhide and stained wood.

We have lived here for 12 years and I think it has taken me just as long to figure out how to blend our tastes and come up with “our” style but I think I have finally figured it out!

Adding elements that appeal to both of us is not always easy but I find that when I consider both of our tastes I like the results even better than if I only considered my own.

Besides blending styles, I had to find a way to incorporate family pieces in to our home.

Many of our antiques came from my husband’s grandmother. I have integrated them in with the pieces we have purchased on our own and things I have collected from yard sales and Craig’s list. I have painted some and left others alone.

Our home is a blend of leather and stained woods (his favorites) as well as fabrics and finishes I love.

I recently finished re-doing our formal dining room and I absolutely adore how it turned out.
It’s my favorite room in the house.
It is casual and comfortable and it seats a crowd.
We almost always host Thanksgiving and as well as a lot of family get-togethers so this space is well-used.
That said, our living room is the main hub of activity around here.
We do not have a formal living area, so this one serves as both a formal and casual space.
As you can tell, our home is very open and full of light.
It is what drew us to this house when we bought it.

The living room and kitchen are open to one another. I absolutely love this when we are entertaining family and friends.

When I’m working in the kitchen I am never all by myself.

It was also really nice when the kids were little and were playing in the living room. I could keep my eye on everything even when doing dishes.

You’ll notice my cabinets are stained and not painted — which seems to be the trend these days. And, truthfully, I am dying to paint them! I think it would brighten up the whole room and it would just make me feel happy to be in a lighter space.
Again, hubby thinks it would be a shame to paint over stained wood, so we sit at an impasse!
But, trust me, I am quietly coming up with ideas to blend our two opinions to hopefully create something fabulous!
Heading across the house on the main floor is our master bedroom.
As with all the rooms in our home, it is good-size.
It comes in handy because I have done many sewing projects in this room since I’m lacking a designated crafting/sewing space.
When I’m in project mode I set up a table and my sewing machine and do everything in here.
This is another room I have been slowly updating.
It’s not completely finished but I’m happy with it for now.
At some point, I’ll pick up a paint brush and paint a piece or two in here.
You’ll notice my house is a work in progress. Truthfully, I think it always will be!
I just can’t seem to let well enough alone!
Another room I recently finished is my tween daughter’s room.
This is what it looked like until just recently. Yes, I updated the update! (See what I mean?)
The bed in the picture was my husband’s from his bachelor days and I really wanted something “girlier” for her.
I finally found an iron bed on Craig’s List but haven’t photographed her room with it yet. Be sure to stop by my blog because I will be posting about it very soon!

Here’s a very small peek at my son’s room.

It’s undergoing a very slow makeover as well! (You might say I have “decorating ADD”! )

When we got my daughter’s new bed we moved the queen in to my son’s room. I’m planning to paint and do some other DIY’s to bring his room together. I’m so anxious to make his room in to something special!

Thank you so much for touring my home today! And, thank you Meegan, for inviting me to join you at your beautiful blog. It’s been so much fun making myself at home here today!

Please stop by my blog and leave me a comment if you get a chance. I would love to hear from you!

Thanks SO MUCH, for joining us for Field Trip Friday, Julie!!
