I must admit I was excited and yet a little hesitant to make my
DIY Vintage Crochet Wall Hanging.
It all started years ago when I received a bed coverlet from my mom. Apparently my great grandmother had made it.
Unfortunately, moths had gotten to it long before that. I was torn as to what I should do.
Do I keep it? Get rid of it? Try to salvage what was left? I truly was puzzled as to what I should do. I kept it in my cedar chest for years. Occasionally, I would lay it across my bed hiding the badly eaten cotton strips.
Then, I spotted some lovely crochet wall hangings. They were all over Pinterest, Instagram and from other bloggers.
I remembered the vintage crochet piece I had…And thought, “Why not make a DIY Vintage Crochet Wall Hanging from my grandmother’s coverlet?”
Carefully and painstakingly, I snipped the hand sewn threading from the moth eaten cotton.
Since I wanted to hang it with a rustic feel, so I used an apple tree stick.
I found a reasonable area to cut the crocheted piece. (Believe me when I tell you, there is LOADS more of crochet left over.)
Carefully, I wove the apple stick through the crochet. Then tied a string of twine on the stick to use as a hanger.
For as much as I was afraid to cut into the crochet, I LOVE my DIY Vintage Crochet Wall Hanging, that much more. I am still contemplating adding fringe to the bottom. Would you add some?

Meegan, I love how you honored your grandmother’s handwork by creating this wall hanging! When I see similar pieces at the auction that I attend, I just want to save them all. I have a quilt that my grandmother made. Your story reminds me to put in in something that the moths cannot get into!
Beautiful! I am so glad you saved this lovely piece of crochet. Of course it has sentimental value for you, but it’s a treasure for the rest of us to look at and see the kind of work that was once done. I have a crochet bedspread that my mother in law made years ago that I keep in a chest. It’s in good shape but if it wasn’t I would do the same thing that you have done.

No fringe – I would leave as is. It is just beautiful and a very creative idea.
