Sometimes the best way to get your creative juices flowing is a trip to Ikea. I came upon the cutest stool. At that moment, I knew it was time to design a Ikea Marius Stool Makeover.
I loved the shape, size and height to use out by the pool or on my cottage apartment back porch. I was so excited to get started.
My Ikea Marius Stool Makeover is part of the Monthly International Bloggers Club. Every month we have a theme and share our projects on the 3rd Monday of every month. From South Africa, to Australia, to Canada, to the US. It’s a great way to be a part of an International group of fabulous women.
This month I am excited to use a Marius Stool from Ikea as part of the “Painted Furniture Challenge”. I could visualize what I wanted, and with a just a few components I was ready to get started.
What I used:
1-Marius Stool from Ikea (assembled)
1-roll jute twine ( bought mine at Hobby Lobby)
Hot glue gun
Hot glue sticks
scissors
Inglenook Fusion Mineral Paint
Paint and Stencil Brushes
1-Mandala Stencil from UrbanXElites
5-bright craft paints
It was easy to assemble following the instructions.
Now the fun and creativity begins…
Starting at the bottom of each leg, I used hot glue to adhere the jute twine. As I wrapped the jute around the legs, I glued the twine about every 15 or 20th time. This helps the jute twine from slipping.
*Don’t skip this part because it can REALLY help keep the twine from unraveling or getting loose.*
Above you can see all the stool legs wrapped with jute twine. The vision of a Boho style stool already happening!
Once the legs were wrapped, it was time to paint the stool seat with Inglenook Fusion Mineral Paint, using a round brush. This brush helped from streaking and keeps an even coat. To cover the seat completely it took 3 coats of paint.
Take the extra time to paint the sides of the seat and inside of the circle openings. This gives a finished look.
It was time to “decorate” the seat top using a stencil from UrbanXElites. As well as 5 colorful craft paints from FolkArt.
With a small stencil brush/sponge I carefully pounced the various colors throughout the stencil while trying to create a cohesive look.
The brightness compared to the muted stool base was just what I pictured. A little Boho with a touch of 70s style, too.
Having a stool like this poolside is perfect for my drink, holding a book, or my sun screen. AND it’s one of a kind.
You can design a Ikea Marius Stool Makeover with paint, jute and a stencil for a Boho style. It takes just a few hours to create a whole new vibe.

I love how you gave a plain IKEA Marius stool a lovely coastal vibe. It IS a perfect poolside table now! Wrapping the legs in jute twine is so smart too. I’m not going to lie, I’m green with envy that you have a pool. LOL
Well I learnt something new today. I have never heard of a Marius stool, which is very cute. But after the makeover it is awesome, I love the mandala and the colours you chose.
