Welcome to Field Trip Friday with Redhead Can Decorate!

I can hardly wait for you to read this post from one of my all-time favorite bloggers.  Julie is talented, creative, and her blog is filled to the brim with personality and spunk-just like Julie!!  So, with out any further adieu…Here is Julie…

I’m Julie, the redhead from redheadcandecorate.com.

RedheadCanDecorateButton1

I blog about how my husband and I “DIY” decorate our home & cook for our family.

We live in Michigan and we have 2 girls and a new kitty.

I love my family! no name

This photo was taken at Niagara Falls. We are both originally from NY.

Ever been?

Speaking of which…

Who doesn’t love a good field trip?

Remember the days when your class would all hop on the yellow bus for a day at the zoo, or aquarium?

That was the best.

Now a days I mostly just get to chaperone the field trips, until now :)

I am so excited to have you all over.

Come on in Meegan, I will show you around.

Maybe some of your followers can try one of our ideas.

Here’s our most recent project:

Winter Beach Lodge Living Room

Winter Beach Lodge Makeover

My husband, Richard, and I, transformed our dark living room by selling our sectional on Craig’s List, updating the furniture, painting, and adding some inexpensive custom trim to the walls to open the space.

I also integrated several DIY decorating ideas into the space such as:

Thrift Store Lamp Makeover

&

Illuminated Photo Door

We also used a dead elm stump from our yard to make an end table.

This was really easy, and almost free.

Just had to buy a can of polyurethane.

Here’s a couple more makeovers we’ve completed through out our home.

Saving $ and creating a comfortable, updated look is always the focus.

There’s always something cooking at Red’s.

Here’s a surprisingly easy dish:

Or if you are a pasta lover, here’s a quick one:

Linguini & Clams

Maybe you are a meat lover like my hubby?

This is my sister’s recipe, and she’s a redhead too.

BAKED Teriyaki Baby Back Ribs

Or…forget dinner, and just have a cookie instead.

These are good for you and my family LOVES them.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

Is it time for a nappy yet?

Oh wait, I want to make sure I share this easy pie crust for apple pie season.

You actually make this crust in the pie plate and there is no rolling. It turns out perfect every time.

I use it with my Dutch Apple Pie.

Easy 10 minute pie crust.

I hope you enjoyed the tour.

I post every Friday, so I hope you will visit then too.

I’m on Facebook a lot, so that’s a great way to follow too.

Field Trip Friday-My “New” Living Room Tour

September 6, 2013 By Meegan 12 Comments

It’s Field Trip Friday!!  I am excited to show you my “New” living room.  No, we haven’t moved out of our place, but we HAVE moved furniture around to give us a whole new look and feel.

I can hardly wait to start the tour!

My "New" Living Room Tour

My living room used to look like this as of  last Friday:

My "New" Living Room Tour

I posted My Living Room Makeover last year around this time.  It looks nice, right?  It’s open and feels like a home.  I was really happy with the feel I was creating.  And, I still am working on the look and feel I want to create.

But, after thinking, pondering, and finally having in my head what I REALLY wanted, this is what I did.

My "New" Living Room Tour

Now as you walk in the door, this is what you will see.  Wow!  It’s SO open now!  You can feel how much room we made by moving the sofa at an angle.  I like the look of the grandfather clock behind the sofa.  It is like layering your clothes.  You can layer furniture as well.  And then with my grandpa’s wooden chest flanked to the left of the sofa, it is warm and inviting.

My "New" Living Room Tour

I love this vignette with my Fleur Box,my painted lamp, a vase filled with various blue marbles, and of course my blue insulators.

My "New" Living Room Tour

As you look further to the left you can get a better idea of how the WHOLE room looks, now.  I love that you can see the shutter next to the Grandfather clock.  They pair well together, don’t they?  It’s really hard to see my curtains, but they are sheets from good ol’ Walmart.  Yep, I clipped them onto a curtain rod and now they are perfect for this room.

My "New" Living Room Tour

I REALLY like the chair in this corner.  The framed girl portrait is a print.  It is one of our family favorites.  We often try to guess what she is thinking.  Is she waiting for someone, has she just said good-bye to her love, is she sad, how old is she?  It’s kind of a fun little game we all like to play.

Doesn’t the chair look happy with the lamp behind her.  If you look in the first picture, you will notice that I have painted my lamp stand Antique Gray from Ace hardware.  Yes, I also made the lampshade flowers to add some softness to the room.

My "New" Living Room Tour

I made the pillow before I even started blogging, but you can find the instructions here.  A more full look at the bookshelves.  If you notice, in the first picture all of the books have a dark cover.  I turned ALL of the books around so that only the pages show, rather than the bound side.  It creates a softer look for the whole area, don’t you think?  Then I didn’t have to recover the books, either.  Saved me a lot of time.  Also framing the book page wreath makes it an art piece, rather than a seasonal piece.

My "New" Living Room Tour

And this is what it looks like as you walk in as you look to your far right.  I love the feel and look of this room now.  I seriously walk into this room and smile every time I see it.  I love all of the layers.  NOW, it feels like Meegan is at home.

Now I am just looking for a new rug.  I have been for months.  I might just need to make my own shower curtain rug, so I get what I really like and want.

I hope you have enjoyed my Field Trip Friday “new” living room tour.  It is really fun for me to share it with you!

Yay!!  It’s Field Trip Friday with Fresh Idea Studio.  You will love Therese and all of her talent and creativity to make her house a home.  Now for the delightful home tour from Therese!!

Hi! I’m Therese from Fresh Idea Studio. Welcome to the place I call home. Our New House

We built our house in the Summer of 2012. We moved in the week just before Halloween, so it’s been almost a year now and I have to say it was quite the whirlwind.
Our HousePicking up with the hubs, 3 kids, a dog, cat and fish…even if it was only 4 miles up the road, well…it wasn’t f-u-n, put it that way.

If you’ve ever moved with children and all their ‘stuff’ you know what I’m talking about here but that’s all said and done.

So, come on in and make yourself comfortable my new friends. Let me show you around. Front doorEntrywayThis is our foyer and front room … front room…situated to your left as you enter through the front door.

Or should I say, AK2 & 3’s “hotel room”. {Hotel? really, girls? I promise you there’s no room service here my sweets. ha!} Oh, AK1,2 & 3 is how I like write about my 3 daughter’s on the blog. {Same initials, same monogram; that’s right, I’m a southern gal at heart. We like our two part names and monograms, don’t we now.} But I digress.

Down the same hall a bit, you’ll find an extra bedroom we are using as a playroom for the time being.play room diy headboard

There are a couple more bathrooms, a super messy craft space and the laundry room which I simply don’t have any photos of yet.

And, then there’s the master bedroom and bath down at the end in the back of the house. master bedroom

Seriously, though. I’d love to have you come over and visit anytime! The doors always open.

We have a lot of fun here… and I’m not just talking decorating projects and crafts either. We like to cook up a thing or two and have even been know to throw a good party now and again.

So, let’s go grab a tall, sweet tea and relax a bit, shall we?

Here’s wishing you Happy Friday and a nice, long Labor Day weekend! Looking forward to getting together again real soon.

Thanks so much sweet Meegan for taking your Friday Field trip down to Florida to see me.

Field Trip Friday With Design Dreams By Anne

August 23, 2013 By Meegan 45 Comments

[slideshow_deploy id=’4254′]

Hello my friends!!  I am super excited for this Field Trip Friday with Design Dreams by Anne.  You will love, love, love her home tour!  So without any further adieu let’s get started!!

Hi!  I’m Anne from DesignDreams by Anne.  Welcome to my home!

Three years ago, almost to the day, I bought a 1930s fixer-upper cottage. I was recently separated and wanted a project to focus on to help me pass the time. When I first moved in, I had thought I would be handling mostly cosmetic changes – I was wrong…

The longer I lived in the house, the more I realized there was much more to be dealt with than what appeared on the surface and it would be costly to deal with.  I took to scrounging materials, picking up roadside items, dumpster diving, yard sale’ing, horse-trading and swapping all sorts of things to get the look I wanted. Instead of hiring contractors, I invested in a starter set of power tools and took on the projects myself. It’s been a lot of work and a lot of fun, too.  The satisfaction of having done it all myself and on a small budget is HUGE.  Here is my journey.

First up was my kitchen.  It needed a big overhaul so I used the Home Depot “12 Months No Interest” plan and bought cabinets, counters, sink, faucet, plumbing materials and lights and I got to work.  I also placed my sideboard in the kitchen and put a shelf over it for some free additional storage space.   This is an Ikea sideboard that I painted with a home made paint to give it an antique look.

I found a pot rack at a yard sale for $3 and hung it on the wall beside the stove for easy access.  That bump out wall is the original chimney.  Some day I’ll tear all the drywall off it and make it into a feature…  some day…

The previous owners had an addition built onto the original footprint and now this kitchen has no windows – UGH!  So I carved two holes between the studs over the kitchen sink to give myself a view into the next space that DOES have windows.

I built some shelves from reclaimed wood and brackets I bought from Ikea.

I built a pantry cabinet.  I needed a custom size to fit the space I had, so building was my only option.  I still have to finish the shelves and add a door to the bottom half, but it’s so handy!
I gave my bedroom a huge makeover. I painted EVERYTHING – walls, furniture, trim, closet doors, and more! I built a headboard from a 100 year old door I got at a yard sale for $5.
A new bedspread and shams complete the makeover.

Then I tackled my spare bedroom, making curtains and shams from tea towels I got in a clearance bin.

I added a shelf desk and painted some grain sack stripes on it to dress it up.

I had an enclosed porch at the back of the house with nothing in it except washer/dryer connections, so I made it into a laundry/mudroom with lots of storage. I moved the existing dryer vent and bought a stackable washer & dryer to save space.
I used an old potting bench for a counter and hung seed catalog covers on my dryer to doll it up a bit.  My curtains are another clearance bin find – a twin sheet that I folded in half and attached to a rod with clips.
My biggest challenge so far was tearing apart the original 1930s bathroom and rebuilding the whole thing from scratch.

Every room in the house has been painted in either tan or off-white.  I buckled down and painted all the ugly orange wood trim in the house.  It looks amazing now!  I’ve also painted most of the furniture so it all coordinates better.  Painting it was the best idea, the furniture went from looking old and tired to fresh and new again.

For a dining room hutch, I bought a 2nd hand Baker’s Rack for $25 and gave it a makeover.  I added wood shelves and a new wood top and stained/painted the whole thing.

Then I refinished my dining room table to match the new industrial style that I’m falling in love with:

I gave my master bathroom a makeover based on a table cloth I found in a clearance bin (gotta love those clearance bins!!!)  I used the tablecloth as a shower curtain.  I have a fabric liner as well, but the tablecloth is indoor/outdoor fabric – perfect for a bathroom!!

I’m still working on finding ways to brighten my kitchen and I plan to add a window over my laundry tub and widen the opening into my dining room, but mostly the big projects indoors are done!  Hooray!  Next year’s focus will be on landscaping, decks and patios.

Hope you enjoyed the tour. I have lots more photos and how-to details on my blog – come over and visit some time!  For more photos on the room tours, click on the links:
