How to Make a Shower Curtain Rug

December 24, 2012 By Meegan 62 Comments

Hello Hello! How are you this fine day?  I hope you are doing well.

Okay!  Let’s get down to business and let me show you How to Make a Shower Curtain Rug.

How To Make a Shower Curtain Rug by meeganmakes.com

Best of 2012-Shower Curtain Rug

I promised to share this LOVELY “Shower Curtain” rug with you.  Isn’t it lovely? Yep, that’s right-my daughter made it.

After looking several places, my daughter found this beautiful FABRIC (Very important!) shower curtain at Target.  It was $20.  And exactly what she wanted.  Perfect colors and pattern.  You could use any of your favorite fabrics, but she LOVED the print, and it was already hemmed and everything!!Best of 2012-Shower Curtain Rug

Then she purchased a flat pile rug.  So the fabric would lay smoothly for her final product.      Best of 2012-Shower Curtain Rug
Directions:

First: Iron your shower curtain/fabric.  Otherwise you will have wrinkles in your final project.  No need to wash your fabric beforehand.

Second:  Make sure you have excess on all 4 sides of your fabric, to fold over the rug edges.  Apply spray adhesive to BOTH the rug AND the fabric.

Third: Spread and layout the fabric smoothly.  Using a warm iron “seal” the fabric and rug together.  Be sure to iron the WHOLE area.

Fourth: Flip your rug over.  While pulling tightly, and using a glue gun, fold and glue your excess edges.

After gluing, it will look like this.

You are ALMOST done…

Fifth: Using a WATER BASE, CRYSTAL CLEAR Polyurethane, costing about $15-20 a quart.
 Best of 2012-Shower Curtain Rug
 Begin coating your “rug”.
The polyurethane will look white as you use it-but it will dry clear.  Apply 2 to 3 coats, letting it dry in-between each coat.  Dry at least an hour, then reapply another coat.  After the final coat, let it dry over night, maybe longer until it doesn’t have a “sticky” feeling.
You will have LOTS of polyurethane left over-you will be able to make rugs for your whole house.
Your finished product will look like this:

Gorgeous, isn’t it? It works perfectly with her “new” slipcover, and her adorable pillows.  She did a great job didn’t she??  BTW-It is EASY to clean. Use a damp cloth, wipe and you are done.
I hope you are enjoying my blog as much as I am enjoying sharing it with you.

Thanks for joining me for: How to Make a Shower Curtain Rug.

Enjoy all the good things in life-for there are MANY!

OMG! I’m a newbie to your BLOG and you already have me stacking up projects to do. But guess that’s one of the reasons I’m here, eh? Yeah! I put down vinyl tile flooring in a room which I thought was going to be my sewing room but realized it would make a nicer guest room instead so have been on the look out for a rug to make the room cosier. Haven’t cared for the prices of most of the larger throw rugs but you’ve given me a great idea so now I’ll be seaching for fabrics to make rugs for guest room. Hey, I also need a rug for my wicker arrangement on the deck now and am I on a roll? You betcha!

What does the rug feel like after all the poly coats? I can’t help but think it would feel hard and uncomfortable.

In the beginning it feels a little “hard” but after a short time it softens up from the wear. You will like it, Christine :)
Enjoy! And let me know if you make one.

This looks like a great idea! I just bought a home with ceramic tile throughout. I don’t want my dining room chairs to scratch up my nice tile so I’m on the lookout for a large rug but they are so EXPENSIVE! Do you think that this kind of rug could withstand the chairs sliding in and out or would it tear?

    Thanks!

It doesn’t make it hard, because you roll on a thin layer of poly. It is a little stiff, but not uncomfortable.

I can’t say that would work, because I have never tried it. BUT, I do know they make a water resistant Mod-Podge. I would do some research to make sure before I did that. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

This may sound dumb, but why do you use the poly on the rug? I was just curious. Thank you for the great idea.

      April 2, 2016 at 4:25 PM

The poly helps adhere the fabric to the rug. Otherwise the fabric will shift and cause wrinkles. It is also very easy to clean with the poly. Just use a wet cloth and Dawn soap and the rug will clean up nicely.
Thanks for asking. I appreciate you stopping by.

I honestly think the fabric would be to thin and the poly would soak through to the rug. You would have dark spots and lighter spots depending on how thick you layer the poly. AND you wouldn’t see the fabric pattern as well. It is a great thought though.
      Good luck an have fun.
