Field Trip Friday with Michele from Shelstring

June 27, 2014 By Meegan 2 Comments

It’s Field Trip Friday!  One of my favorite blogging days of the week.  Today, I have a Field Trip Friday with Michele from Shelstring. Michele is a sweetie full of talent.  She has a beautiful family, home, and LOTS of DIY inspiration.  I KNOW you will love her as much as I do.  Enjoy Field Trip Friday with Michele from Shelstring…

Hello! My name is Michele. I’m so excited to be here on “Field Trip Friday” with Meegan. She is such a sweet person and I enjoy reading her field trips, so I was delighted when she asked me to be a part of one today.

I’m a mother of seven children and devoted wife.
I live in a little suburb of Eugene Oregon called Santa Clara and blog over at Shelstring (you can read more about that here). When we first saw our house, we thought it looked like the Brady Bunch house. We searched for our home for a year by the time we finally came upon this one, and I knew it was the one the moment I stepped inside. Immediately I saw the potential it had. Although we’ve worked on it ever since we bought it nine years ago, we still have a lot to do. Part of the reason is that I never feel finished once I complete a project and find myself swinging full circle back to where I started after I’m given a little time.
So I’ll show you a little peek inside, which isn’t going to be that impressive without the “before shots”, but it will be a little taste, at least, which is more than I’ve ever shared before. I’m not sure you’re going to feel priviledged since this is the first time I’ve ever blogged about my house, but I’m willing to give it a go. So come on in, we’re fortunate to be visiting on a sunny day-
I love when spring comes, the first thing I do is visit my favorite nursery and fill up all my flower pots.
This is the first thing I say when I open the door to visitors. You can read all about my
Metal framed chalkboard here .
Our entry console dons a lamp I made from an heirloom butter churn my mother gave me. You can read about that at Live Creatively Inspired , where I guest post each month.
If you look straight on from the front door, you are looking into the dining area where you will see one of my most recent projects. This is the Pine hutch I painted with homemade chalk paint. This hutch holds the china I inherited from my family. It compliments the new beadboard and shaker style framed windows I completed simutaniously in the spring, just in time for guests.

One of the first things we did in our house was remodel the kitchen. I will be sharing a full tour on my blog in my Summer Home Tour Series at the end of the summer, hopefully with the before and afters. Just to give a little insight, we pushed the wall the microwave is on out two feet and made the mud room a little smaller so that we could open up the kitchen a little more. My husband and a friend installed the cabinets and I tiled the backsplash. {One of my favorite things to DIY.}
I just got finished re-organizing our hutch area. The cookbooks were getting a little sloppy and the flour and sugar were on the counter by the sink making it quite a walk when baking.
The mud room was a blank canvas. It was just empty when we moved in. We moved the wall as close to the window as possible when we renovated the kitchen to give it a little more space. Although I installed the beadboard and created the seating area, I didn’t really complete the room until this week. The chalkboard wall was a project I did last summer for the beginning of the school year.
I really had a lot of fun putting this room together. I wanted happy cheerful colors since it is gray and rainy so much of the time here.
The mudroom leads to the outside where I spend at least an hour a day in my gardens. I’m a California girl born and raised, so I don’t want to miss any sunlight when it’s out. One of the things I enjoy about the outdoors is that I often feel inspired to create something.
Here are a few of my favorite outdoor projects:
Baby to Potter- changing table turned potting bench. Here's how I did it! shelstringblog.blogspot.com

Just Sittin'- log leg bench designed by my son, built by me! shelstringblog.blogspot.com

and here’s my latest creation
Water Heater Draft Turned Tier Planter
And a little more seating to enjoy…

Because of my love for the outdoor projects, I often find myself bringing the outdoors in.
Here’s an example:
A Planked Wall– made from our old fence boards
These are just a few of the types of things you will find me doing. I hope you will come by and visit me at Shelstring. I sure have loved visiting with all of you and hope you will also check out Meegan’s home tour on my Summer Home Tour Series. Thank you Meegan for inviting me! I hope you all have a wonderful Friday! ;)
Was I right?  Did you love Michele and her amazing talents?  Isn’t she full of inspiration and creativity?
Thank YOU, Michele for sharing your lovely home and ideas.
Thanks to everyone for stopping by for Field Trip Friday with Michele from Shelstring.

Field Trip Friday with Shanna from Restoration Redoux

June 20, 2014 By Meegan 1 Comment

It’s Friday!  Almost the weekend, and almost Summer.  I am honored to have Field Trip Friday with Shanna from Restoration Redoux today. Shanna will dazzle you with her talent and creativity.  I know you will enjoy Shanna’s work as much as I do.

Take it away Shanna…

Hi everyone! I’m Shanna from Restoration Redoux, and I’m super excited that my blogging buddy Meegan invited me over!

I’m a wife, a stay at home mom of 3 dogs, a cat, and an amazing teenage daughter. I’m a lover of yard sales, all things DIY, and decorating on a budget.

Going to yard sales is in my blood. Some of my earliest memories are going to yard sales with my grandmother. She was a doll collector, and I loved seeing the ratty, over-loved dolls she picked up for a quarter and watching her transform them into beautiful cherishables. She would clean them up, repair their clothes, and curl their hair until they looked brand new … and she made a living selling them.

I do sort of the same thing now except with furniture. I love taking old furniture pieces, ready for the dump, and breathing new life into them.

It’s always exciting when my clients send me photos of their pieces in their home like this Pink Striped Changing Table with DIY Frames that I made.

Field Trip Friday to Meegan’s Condo

June 13, 2014 By Meegan Leave a Comment

It’s Field Trip Friday to Meegan’s Condo today!  I realized I always show you the inside of our home, but never the outside.  So today we are going to take a little tour of where I live.  Yep, a Field Trip Friday to Meegan’s Condo…

Let me preface this by saying, I am NOT a fan of where we live.  I mean the desert.  It’s hot, cold, windy, dusty, and well not my cup of tea.  BUT, I have learned to love what is around me.  Even if it isn’t my first choice.

If you know me at all, you KNOW I love the ocean, the waves, the beach, the salty air, and the smells of the ocean life.  So I decided to create my own beach cottage haven, right here in the desert.  Life is good.  It’s very, very good.

Now onto the field trip.  These are my stairs leading up to our home.  We live a simple life upstairs in our condo.  Outside is full of things to observe and appreciate.

The Best of Field Trip Friday

May 30, 2014 By Meegan 2 Comments

It’s Field Trip Friday!  One of my favorite days of the week.  This week I am sharing 4 Field Trips for you.  Each one has been a guest on Field Trip Friday at some point.  I thought it would be fun to look back at  The Best of Field Trip Friday.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did both times around…

There is a small snippet from each field trip so you can get a little taste of what each blogger’s forte’ is.

Let’s get The Best of Field Trip Friday started!!!

First off, we start with one of the best bloggers around:

 Julie, the redhead from redheadcandecorate.com.

Maybe some of your followers can try one of our ideas.

Here’s our most recent project:

Winter Beach Lodge Living Room

Winter Beach Lodge Makeover

My husband, Richard, and I, transformed our dark living room by selling our sectional on Craig’s List, updating the furniture, painting, and adding some inexpensive custom trim to the walls to open the space.

I also integrated several DIY decorating ideas into the space such as:

Thrift Store Lamp Makeover

&

Illuminated Photo Door

We also used a dead elm stump from our yard to make an end table.

This was really easy, and almost free.

Just had to buy a can of polyurethane.

Next, it was a delight to have:

Anne from White Lace Cottage

My kitchen has changed a lot!

Painting my kitchen cabinets was the best decision ever!

They have held up well and make my kitchen nice and bright even in the cold winter months.

Before Photos Of My Kitchen

One of my favorite things to collect is white ironstone.

I love my open cabinets, it now gives me more room to display my growing collection.

My kitchen was not the only room changed when I started my blog.

I transformed our whole house!

I painted all of my walls with a creamy white color.

This allows me to add any color to the mix, which is fun to do since I love to change!

Another classic blogger:

Julie from the blog, Lilacs & Longhorns.

Our home is a blend of leather and stained woods (his favorites) as well as fabrics and finishes I love.

I recently finished re-doing our formal dining room and I absolutely adore how it turned out.
It’s my favorite room in the house.
It is casual and comfortable and it seats a crowd.
We almost always host Thanksgiving and as well as a lot of family get-togethers so this space is well-used.
That said, our living room is the main hub of activity around here.
We do not have a formal living area, so this one serves as both a formal and casual space.
As you can tell, our home is very open and full of light.
It is what drew us to this house when we bought it.

And finally, this week, a fabulous DIYER:

 Jeanette from Country Design Style.

I made the bed, not just pulling the sheets up. I made the bed, using plywood and wood leftover from a house construction across the street in our old neighborhood. The chair was made copied from one in a local furniture store window, except I added the “bowtie” a family symbol. The cabinet on the right was made to hold a TV but in this house it’s only duty now is to hold pillows.

Our TV now hangs on the wall in the master bedroom. My grandson helped make the shelf under the TV during summer break.

Country Design Style

This is a faux or fake fireplace and one of my personal favorites. Many broken and scrap wood pieces were used to make the mantel. This picture does not show it well, but the firebox area is painted with chalkboard paint. That makes for some fun chalk drawings.

Now let’s run back through the downstairs to the front door. I forgot to show the powder room sink. It was made with a leftover log from the living room ceiling.
I did not make it!

I hope The Best of Field Trip Friday was a lot of fun for you today.  I certainly had a great time enjoying the talents of each of my blogging friends.

Happy Weekend!
