I look forward to field trip Friday every week. Today, Field Trip Friday with Barbara from Chase The Star is inspiring, full of creativity and oh, so much fun! Barbara is a devoted mother and wife. AND, she has talent coming out everywhere as you will soon see…
Hello everyone! I’m Barbara from Chase the Star, I’m thrilled an so honored that my good buddy Meegan asked me to be here today to share my home tour.
I still consider myself to be a newbie blogger, although my blog is going on 2 years now! Everyday is a learning experience, and I’m loving it every step of the way. I live in the beautiful Southern California suburbs with my family. We bought our home in 2011 and have been updating it one second hand item at a time…

Our home isn’t particularly large, but we have a great sized lot and a killer view of Orange County.

That was enough reason for us to invest in this circa 1980’s home that needed LOTS of love. The house is still a work in progress. I have so many plans, and little by little we’re gettin’ there!
When you walk into my home you will be greeted by a 2 story foyer, where I have a cream shutter style cabinet I bought on Craigslist, and a vintage window.

That entry way spills into a large living area. This is our only living space so I divided it into entry way, sitting room, and family room!

This blue desk is one of my favorite DIY’s ever! It was FREE on Craiglist. The lady who was giving it away happened to live a mile from my house so I ran over and picked it up! It’s a Thomasville and all it needed was a little bit of paint, and a lot of love! It serves as the perfect entry way table’; the boys store their shoes in the drawers, and the baskets hold keys, baseball hats, and all the other things that boys can’t live without.

I like blue, can you tell? What I don’t like is our carpet. I absolutely detest it! It’s great quality don’t get me wrong, but I long for hardwoods in the living area. It’s on my list! The entertainment center is my latest project! Stop by my blog next week for the tutorial and story.

Directly across from the ‘entry way’ is the ‘sitting area’. The brown chair is wearing an inexpensive slip cover, because upholstering it is also on my list! The green chair was also a free Craigslist find (seriously check the ‘free’ section of your local Craigslist!). I repurposed a nightstand to use as a side table, and decoupaged a map onto it.

Beyond the living space is the kitchen. This is also a combo type of room; my dining room is part of it.

My favorite thing on the planet is to update furniture! That buffet is an old desk from Ikea! We’ve had it for ages, but didn’t have a need for it when we moved into this house. It sat in my garage forever, so I decided to repurpose it into a sideboard for my dining space.

The dining room table and chairs was purchased at Goodwill. Solid wood with 6 chairs for just $69.99. Folks, I ain’t messin’ around! We brought it home, sanded it, stained it, and recovered the chairs. We could’ve spent so much more on something of lower quality. Instead we have a dining room set that will last for many, many years beautifully!

The rug is from Mohawk; from now until Thanksgiving day you can enter to win a rug of your choice!

On the opposite side of the buffet is my plate wall. Yup they are all from the thrift store, and most of them are hung with DIY Plate Hangers. Flanking those is some burlap art I made last year. They are very special to me because they have our anniversary date on them. Also good reference for the hubs to remember!

I added some chalkboard paint to the side of my pantry. I usually put up bible verses for the kids to memorize, and on occasion my youngest will doodle on it for fun! My oldest’s art work from school is hung just above that.
When you enter our home, if you turn the opposite direction, you will see our stairway and downstairs hallway.

The mirror is another Craigslist find, the previous owner had painted it that awesome shade of green. It was destiny.
Up the stairs I have a gallery wall. This is where I display the kids school pictures and other family shots.

Down the hallway you’ll find another gallery wall. This one houses a collection of random shots of the kids throughout the years. I enlarged and printed them myself. The frames were painted the same color for uniformity.

So far, that’s what we’ve updated in the last couple of years. We (I) have plans for so much more..the second story and backyard for starters!
When we moved in I did what I could to make my house cheery and bright. I wanted my house to truly be my family’s ‘home’, which means practical design and decor for an active bunch. It also means warm and cozy nights tootsies relaxing by a fire on a cold fall night.

This is the home our kids will reminisce about when they’re adults, so it goes beyond pretty things, and neatly tucked away shoes. It’s lived in, laughed in, loved in. Not the fanciest or biggest, but it’s ours. It’s the family that lives in it that makes this suburban Southern California house, a home.
I’d like to thank my good friend Meegan once again for inviting me to share my home with you! Stop by Chase the Star for more decor, crafts, repurposed stuff, and a few laughs here and there! Also, follow me on social media to keep up with my latest posts!

Isn’t Barbara amazing?? I hope she has inspired you as much as she has me!! Thanks so much for the home tour Barbara!

Field Trip Friday with Kristi From I Should Be Mopping The Floor
This above photo is an older one {you can see the old wall and cabinet colors in the background}, but it shows the kitchen island we redid a while back. It’s been one of my favorite projects that we’ve ever done. Check it out here.
This photo is looking from the kitchen area into the breakfast nook. There’s a lot of projects in here, too. The Chalkboard Backpack Station on the left wall is fabulous for keeping the kids’ backpacks and lunch boxes organized {see the tutorial for it here}. The buffet on the right was a Craigslist find that I refinished here. And then we added open shelving above it here. The faux deer trophies above the windows were super fun to use. And those window treatments are actually faux roman shades, which I did a tutorial on here.
I still have plans to refinish our little table there. This table has some sentimental value, and although a larger one may fit better in this space, this one will be with us forever. I plan to restain the actual table and then paint each chair a different color, in chalk paint. Kind of a Monica Gellar kind of look, huh? :)
Our home office is next to the bathroom. It got a mini makeover here.
And in the hallway is our gallery wall.
Everyone come back next week for another post in Field Trip Friday from Barbara at Chase The Star. Woot woot!

NOW…dadadada…It’s time for Field Trip Friday with Jeanette from Country Design Style. I am excited for you to see Jeanette’s decor, and style. She is also SO sweet! Now, it is Jeanette’s turn to show you her beautiful home…
Hello, my name is Jeanette and I have a furniture and decor website and blog called Country Design Style.
My sweet friend Meegan asked me if I would share our cabin on her lovely Meegan Makes website and of course I jumped for joy.
I started blogging three years ago, and got serious about it in April when I started Country Design Style. Before that I was just playing.
I’ve always love designing and building things and having a pretty home. I would rather make it than buy it.
So, on to the field trip to our home.
Our home is what I call a craftsman cabin. At least on the outside. The cabin sold us when we first stepped on the front porch. We can usually be found sitting on the porch.

Stepping inside you will notice it is not a typical cabin. When we moved in every wall and ceiling was painted yellow. At first I decorated in a cabin style but it didn’t fit us. So I have been taking the heavy yellows, reds and greens out and adding whites, creams and grays.
You enter through the glass front door to a stone wall that is our 14 foot long fireplace.
It’s at this point that Mike will tell new guests, “Besides the upholstered furniture we didn’t spend more than $20 for anything in the house!”
We do have a handmade home.
Our living room is cozy, comfortable and rustic. We can easily sit 16 people comfortably around the coffee table if someone doesn’t mind sitting on the shaggy ottoman. I made the the floor mirror using mirrored sliding closet door and 2 by 8 lumber.
We love the logs on the ceiling…hope they always stay up there! Our cable box is hidden and someday there are plans to build something to hide the TV.
Behind the stone fireplace is Mike’s office. Rarely used since retirement.
Our dining room. I recently remade the white buffet into my desk. It holds my computer, files and all my office supplies.
We do not have curtains. Living in the pines privacy is not an issue and I love any amount of light we can get. The front porch limits most of the sunlight.
Here’s the kitchen from the dining room. I like all the cabinets. The door goes to the back porch.
This is the kitchen from the back door. There is a pantry door in the center of the photo. The silver and black square to the left of the pantry is a coffeemaker. That’s the other thing that sold us on the cabin.
Down the hallway is our master bedroom.
I made the bed, not just pulling the sheets up. I made the bed, using plywood and wood leftover from a house construction across the street in our old neighborhood. The chair was made copied from one in a local furniture store window, except I added the “bowtie” a family symbol. The cabinet on the right was made to hold a TV but in this house it’s only duty now is to hold pillows.
Our TV now hangs on the wall in the master bedroom. My grandson helped make the shelf under the TV during summer break.
This is a faux or fake fireplace and one of my personal favorites. Many broken and scrap wood pieces were used to make the mantel. This picture does not show it well, but the firebox area is painted with chalkboard paint. That makes for some fun chalk drawings.
Now let’s run back through the downstairs to the front door. I forgot to show the powder room sink. It was made with a leftover log from the living room ceiling.
I did not make it!
Upstairs is a landing area between two bedrooms. I turned this area into my craft room. The round bookcase turns.
The back cabinet holds more craft supplies and the awesome drafting table was found at a yard sale for $20.
Through the glass door is the balcony. The warmest place in the house and stunning views.
Both bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs are exactly the same. We made one into the “adult” guest room.
The “adult” bathroom.

The other bedroom is the “kids” guest room.
Here’s the kid’s bathroom…and my shadow!

When we moved in 8 years ago the back porch was a wood deck. With the four seasons we have here the wood was not going to last. We added stone, railing to match the front, a jacuzzi, outdoor kitchen and a lower patio with a fire pit. Many meals are cooked here.

I saved the best, at least in my mind, for last. My little workshop. This wooden shed is 6 feet by 8 feet and holds all my woodworking tools. Plus it’s cute inside.

Thank you Meegan for sharing our cabin on your beautiful blog here today. I hope everyone enjoyed the tour and come back soon!
Did I tell you You would LOVE Jeanette’s Home??? Was I right?? Yep, I thought I was!
Thanks for your beautiful home tour today, Jeanette! You are amazing! Loves, my friend!
