DIY Sand in A Bottle Christmas Ornament

July 16, 2025 By Meegan Leave a Comment

While collecting sand from various beaches all over the world, it’s been a delight to make a DIY Sand in A Bottle Christmas Ornament. These are creative and fun way to add family memories and traditions to your Christmas tree.

Wouldn’t they make memorable gifts or to use  as gift tags, too?

While thinking of ideas on how to decorate a beach themed Christmas in July tree. The creative juices were flowing. When I spotted these tiny bottles, everything “clicked” on how to use my seashell and sand collections.

I found these Tim Holtz small bottles with cork lids here.  They are the perfect size for the 3 ft King Noble Fir that I decorated for Christmas in July with King of Christmas.

This sand is from Bora Bora and Morea, from a trip we took more than 20 years ago.

It’s more coarse and white than usually seen off the California coast.

Granddaughter, Claire collected these tiny white rocks (along with large grains of sand) for me one year at a family beach trip. Another great filler for the tiny bottles.

This clear and worn bottle found at the bottom of the ocean is filled with small shells…

and pink sand from Bermuda. The kids and grandkids know me well. And bring back sand and shells wherever they have traveled.

Once the bottles were filled with sand, shells or sea glass, they were ready to be tied with cotton string for hanging on the beach style tree.

Cutting the string at 12 to 18 inch lengths, I wrapped the string around the “neck” of the bottle 2 or 3 times. Then tied a square knot, so it wouldn’t slip or come undone.

The next step was to tie a slip knot to make a loop for hanging on the tree.

Super EASY!

Your DIY Sand in A Bottle Christmas Ornament is ready for hanging on a beach styled tree, as a memory gift or a gift tag.

Each one is different with various textures, colors and memories.

Fill each bottle with one shell or ALL the way up with sand, sea glass or your own beach treasures. Such as sticks, rocks, dried seaweed, etc…

From a recent trip this is fresh sand from Carlsbad, California.

This particular bottle is filled with shells. The last shell was just a little too big to fit in completely. As a result of this, it is the lid to hold in the rest of the shells. Cute for a new look.

How many DIY Sand in A Bottle Christmas Ornaments do YOU think you will make for your next beach style Christmas tree?

I am excited to see your imagination and what YOU come up with.

Thanks for stopping by and joining me today. It’s always a pleasure to have you here.
