Succulent Tips and Care

February 26, 2013 By Meegan 6 Comments

Are you a gardener?  Can you grow plants easily?  Well, if you can, I am a little jealous!  I am not a good gardener.  I wish I was.  But I want to be.  Really, I do.  But, I have heard succulents are easy to grow,  Let’s see if I can follow my own rules for succulent tips and care.

I have tried growing succulents before and to no avail, I killed them, too.  BOO!  Now that is sad!Although, I think I will give succulents just one more try.  While visiting my mom, she gave me a whole succulent plant. I am a little worried, but like I said I just want to give it one more try.  My mom gave me a few tips of growing and caring for succulents.  I thought it would be fun to share them with you, too.

Doesn’t this look like just out of a magazine?  This is one way to grow your succulents inside.  They may not last longer than a month.  But think of it like fresh cut flowers, those don’t last long either.
Put some plastic in the bottom of your pot to keep it from leaking, then some rocks, then planting mix or a mix of dirt and sand.  Then if you want to put polished stones or something on top, before you put the plants in.  You could fill the pot all the way to the top with potting mix and/or soil sand mixture, if you want.
Just make sure the planting mix stays damp in the beginning and your plant gets some sun.

Another tip about succulents is that if a “blossom” breaks off, you can root them in water.  They will start growing a root-kind of just like an avocado seed does.  I decided to do just that with a few “blossoms” that broke off during our travelling.

For this shelf, I decided to use 2 of my old jars as vessels.  I think they look pretty with hubby’s childhood marbles in the bottom.

Make sure the bottom of the “blossom” is in the water.   Check your vessel often to be sure the plant is reaching the water.  Also allow them get some natural light.

I added one to a green bottle for our bedroom.  The bottle is filled to the top with water.  And again, a sun lit area.

On the kitchen bar, my vessels are an old mason jar, an olive oil bottle and a small cup one of our daughters made in kindergarten.  Perfect sun light here, too.

For my last tip.  Did you know if the petals break off, you can place them in moist soil and they will begin to root?  Once again, just keep them in a moist soil with some light.  This pot is outside on my porch.
Wish me luck!!  I hope I can follow my own succulent tips and care!  let me know what is successful for you, too!!
Thanks for stopping by today.  I am so happy to have new followers all the time!  Make it a beautiful day!

Next from Posh Pink Giraffe is a PB Knock-off Candle Holder:

My Friday Fave PinsAfter receiving her PB Catalog and seeing something very similar to this egg beaded candleholder, Posh Pink Giraffe decided to make her own-using a can lid, pipe cleaners, and beads.  Simply amazing!!

The next pin is from one of my all-time fave bloggers, June.

My Thrift Finds

March 2, 2013 By Meegan 11 Comments

I haven’t always looked for thrift finds.  But, in just the past few years it has been a fun hobby for me. Today I wanted to share a few of my thrift finds from the past few weeks plus a few more!  So exciting!!

My Thrift Finds

The grapevine ball was $1, basket $1, the candle stick 50 cents, and the shelf was $3.

I had fun changing the shelf up to this:

My thrift Finds

I just love this $3 shelf in our office!!

On another trip to the thrift store, I found this:

My Thrift FindsI know!!  $5-who could resist???  I was so excited to spot a lovely shutter!!

My Thrifting FindsI have already been playing around with the shutter using layers of paint.  I will be showing you that next week.  I can’t wait!!

Hubby knows me so well.  He took me to a HUGE warehouse sale yesterday.  I have been looking for a small table for our place.  Just big/small enough for the 2 of us. And then a place for the grand babies to sit while they eat, color, play games, etc…

My Thrift Finds

Yep!!  We paid $10 for each item!  I am so stoked!  The table is solid wood with a vinear top, made in the 70s.  The chairs are solid wood as well.  They were made in the 60s.

Seriously!  A dining set for $30!!  I can’t wait till my paint brush gets ahold of these!!  I have great plans for these beauties!!

Do you shop thrift stores??  What are your fave finds??

A couple of other thrift finds I have found a $10 coffee table:

My Thrift Finds

A brand new gorgeous $7 frame

My Thrift Finds

And a perfect $8 full length mirror

My thrifted finds

It has been fun and a challenge as well.

My Spring Shelves

March 5, 2013 By Meegan 16 Comments

I love the warm weather with a hint of Spring.  To help me even feel more like Spring is on it’s way, I decided to decorate my Spring Shelves.  Seriously, as I am writing this I hear the sweetest birds singing outside.  So cute…

Anyway…Let’s get this show on the road!!My Spring Shelves

With our windows wide open, the smell of warm, fresh air inspired me to bring out my Spring ideas.

My Spring shelves

Don’t you just love the look of a nest with speckled eggs??  An awesome find at 99centOnly.  The vintage books are a perfect way to add height.

My Spring Shelves

The wreath is usually found on our front door, but she looks happy here with a bird’s nest and the other Spring elements, don’t you think??

My Spring Shelves

Just a closer view of everything.   The branch on the left with the humming bird nest is from my mother-in-law.  She loved hummingbirds.  Another sign that Spring is on it’s way.

My Spring Shelves

The two african violet pots were purchased at Tai PanTrading.  The moss on each pot reminds me of Spring, and new life.

The tulip pot was a dollar at Gardner Village, when I was there a few years ago.  You can’t beat a dollar for tulips, can you??

My Spring Shelves

Do you recognize the grapevine ball??  I found her at the thrift store.  She is just the right texture to finish off my top shelf.

My Spring Shelves

Can you tell I am so happy with my Spring Shelves??

What is inspiring you for Spring??  What is your favorite part about Spring??

My Spring favorites are: bloosoms on trees, green leaves, fresh flowers blooming everywhere, the birds chirping, green grass, and the warm sun telling me Summer is on it’s way.

Thanks for letting me share my Spring Shelves with you today!!
