How To Make Your Own Vintage Sign

May 18, 2015 By Meegan 12 Comments

I have been infatuated with the whole idea of How To Make Your Own Vintage Sign for awhile now. I even shared a post 2 years ago about 12 Homemade Signs. I had found each one of them on Pinterest.

After a few years I decided it was time for me to make my own vintage sign.  It is a knock off of the ones I found on Pinterest.  Of course, I added my own twist, but it looks amazing for our home.

Not only that…But, several of my blogging friends have knocks offs of their own.  I can’t wait to see what they have come up with. Their knock off creations will be listed in the bottom of this post.

Rock Your Knock Off

Here is a quick peek at my sign.  Can you say love???

DIY Cottage Sign

Now let me show you my version of How To Make Your Own Vintage Sign…

Cottage sign Blank Breginning

I started out with a piece of wood left over from the farmhouse coffee table  that I made. The size is a 1x6x18 inches.

Cottage Sign Stained

I used Minwax stain to darken the wood.   This walnut stain was also left over from the farmhouse coffee table. Perfect!

Cottage Sign White Wash

After the stain was almost dry, Using a dry brush I added some leftover Birchwood Valspar paint.

Cottage Sign Hardware

While the paint was drying, I found some rusted window clips.  They would make a great addition to my vintage looking sign. They were given to me when I bought a vintage window frame in Caliente.

Vintage Cottage Sign Paint Layers

I got a sample of Fusion Mineral Paint from SNAP! blogging conference. I was excited to add it to my vintage sign. The color is called Laurentine.  Perfect beachy color, for this sign, don’t you think??

The rusted window clip adds just the touch I was hoping for.

How To Make a Vintage Cottage Sign

Using some leftover blue and white paint from the farmhouse coffee table, I mixed them together for a variegated look.

When the paint was almost dry, I stenciled on the wood it was time for some sanding.  With a 120 grit sandpaper, I sanded the whole sign. front, sides, and all the letters.

Looks like it could have come right off of an old Beach Cottage in the Keys! Perfectly worn :)
