Field Trip Friday with Dear Emmeline

October 10, 2014 By Meegan Leave a Comment

It’s Friday!  And you know what that means, right?

Yep, It’s Field Trip Friday with Dear Emmeline.  I have been following Jessica since her beginnings as a blogger.  I have always been pulled in by her decorative style, and accessory choices.  You could say I want to be her when I grow up.  Now sit back and enjoy Field Trip Friday with Dear Emmeline.

Hello!  My name is Jessica and I’m the writer behind the DIY and lifestyle blog Dear Emmeline.

When Meegan asked if she could bring her readers on a field trip to my blog I of course said yes!
I began my blog near the end of 2011 as a creative outlet after my second child was born.  By the beginning of 2012 I started refinishing furniture and selling it online in local Facebook groups and Craigslist. Eventually, I made a few local connections and began consigning my furniture out of a local barn sale.  When the barn was taken over by Cassie of Primitive and Proper and Sarah aka The Thriftress they graciously allowed me to continue consigning.
Some of my favorite furniture makeovers include this Cross Stitch Dresser, my son’s Woodland Dresser, and an Old Pickup Blue Dresser.
Gradually, I began adding in crafting, sewing, and DIY home decor projects.  Our Embroidery Hoop Pendant Fixture is a reader favorite.
In honor of fall, one of my personal favorites is an easy Faux Cornhusk Wreath.
As of late there hasn’t been a whole ton of small projects or furniture refinishing going on.  In February my husband and I bought a new home.  The main portion of the house was built in 1910 and was in need of major renovation.
We began our renovation journey the very night we closed on the house.  We furiously worked on the house during March and into April at which time my husband had some health issues and I was nearing the end of my third pregnancy.  After the baby was born and hubby was feeling better, we resumed work on the house and were able to move in just before school started at the end of August.

So far we’ve revealed a half bath and our full bath.

This month I plan to focus on finishing up the boys’ camp themed room.
We’re also in the process of waterproofing the dirt cellar and having central air and heat installed.
Once the heating system is in and we’re ready for the late fall and winter weather, I hope to add the finishing touches in the 2nd half bath and kitchen.
For now much of the house still feels like a blank slate but it’s been fun putting our stamp on the space little by little.  If you would like to follow along with our renovation progress, we will continue posting room reveals, DIY projects, and decor tutorials on the blog.

Thanks so much for hanging out with me today!

Stop over and visit anytime,

Jessica
Thank you from the bottom of my heart Jessica.  It has been an honor and a pleasure to have you here for Field Trip Friday with Dear Emmeline.  I know my readers have enjoyed your field trip as much as I have.

Field Trip Friday with Kristi From I Should Be Mopping The Floor

November 15, 2013 By Meegan 8 Comments

[slideshow_deploy id=’4254′]
I look forward to field trip Friday every week.  This field trip from Kristi at I Should Be Mopping The Floor is a first for her.  AND, I KNOW you will be inspired and impressed by her many talents.  Not only is she taleted, but she is a wonderful wife and mother of 2 handsome boys.  AND, one of the kindest bloggers I know.  So with that intro, I will leave the rest of the post for Kristi…
Hi, friends! I’m Kristi from I Should be Mopping the Floor.
Thrilled to be here on Field Trip Friday with my bloggy friend, Meegan.
Thanks for the invite, girlfran!

I’ve been blogging since 2006, however, ISBMTF was started in early spring of 2011. It’s been a super fun creative outlet for me and a fantastic way to meet others who are passionate about similar things! When Meegan initially contacted me to join her for a FTF, I was a little apprehensive…I’ve never actually done a home tour {crazy, no?}! I realized the time had come…so without further adieu, WELCOME TO OUR HOME!

We live smack-dab in the middle of Texas in a military community. We are not military ourselve, but we really enjoy all of the friends we’ve made in our little city. We are also only an hour away from my hometown of Austin.

We also happen to live in cookie-cuttersville {when you move from a 60+ year old home, that whole brand new home thing is appealing…until a few years later when you realize your house is identical to all of the others on your street}. One of our goals has been to take our house from its standard molded footprint into something more custom and with character.
Let’s take a step inside…

This is our entryway. All of the pieces here are oldies: an old sofa table from my parents, dumpster dive suitcases, Goodwill {made-over} lamps and a mirror from my great grandmother’s dresser {you can see the mirror redo here and the dresser redo here}.

As we move past the entryway and into the living area, my new sliding barn door is on the left. It is in front of a small hallway that leads to our master bedroom and laundry room. Check out the entire barn door construction and installation here.

The next area is our living room. I repainted that fireplace last year {and surprised my husband with that when he got home from work that night…ha!}. You can see that makeover here. This is the room we spend the most time in.
On the opposite wall of the fireplace is my chalk-painted piano. Both of my children are in lessons and this free piano was perfect for us. I gave it its painted makeover a few months ago…check that out here.
Just off of the living area is the dining room. This room was made over on a whim when we had our new floors installed {it was one of those, “since we’re ripping out floors, we may as well repaint; and while we’re at it…”}. I’m really happy with how it turned out and we love to entertain in here. Click her for the entire makeover of this room.

Also off the living area is our kitchen, which got an overhaul this summer. While I still have some loose ends in here and haven’t done a final reveal, here’s one of my favorite spots. We added faux stacked cabinetry and repainted all of the cabinets. Check out a part of that makeover here.

This above photo is an older one {you can see the old wall and cabinet colors in the background}, but it shows the kitchen island we redid a while back. It’s been one of my favorite projects that we’ve ever done. Check it out here.

This photo is looking from the kitchen area into the breakfast nook. There’s a lot of projects in here, too. The Chalkboard Backpack Station on the left wall is fabulous for keeping the kids’ backpacks and lunch boxes organized {see the tutorial for it here}. The buffet on the right was a Craigslist find that I refinished here. And then we added open shelving above it here. The faux deer trophies above the windows were super fun to use. And those window treatments are actually faux roman shades, which I did a tutorial on here.

I still have plans to refinish our little table there. This table has some sentimental value, and although a larger one may fit better in this space, this one will be with us forever. I plan to restain the actual table and then paint each chair a different color, in chalk paint. Kind of a Monica Gellar kind of look, huh? :)

I also gave the pantry an overhaul as well.
Check out the post on that here. My dad helped me create those storage crates in there, which I LOVE! I put together a complete tutorial on those here.
We can head down the hall to the boys’ bedrooms. This one above is my older son’s room. He’s actually really tired of the western look we’ve had in here for about five years now {he’s nine now and this just isn’t “cool” anymore}. This room is on the list for a redo, but currently it looks like the above. It’s hard to bring myself to make this room over…it took me six weeks to do the paper bag treatment to the walls in here {that was before the blogging days}.
Next door is my younger son’s room. We redid it last year with touches of Star Wars fun. I love the beds in here…another Craigslist find {although, usually each bedpost has a ball cap hanging off of it}. We did these board and batten walls in here for less than $30. See that tutorial here. That lamp is also a Goodwill makeover that appeared here on the blog.
Here is the bathroom that the boys share, just down the hall from their rooms.
It was one of the first big makeovers I ever blogged about. You can see that here.

Our home office is next to the bathroom. It got a mini makeover here.

And in the hallway is our gallery wall.

Back on the other side of the living area is our laundry room, which is still a makeover in progress. I’m hoping to have it done pretty quickly and be able to post about it soon.
And a room that doesn’t appear on the blog much {ever} is our master bedroom. It is in need of a tune up and I do plan to tackle it, as well as the master bathroom, in the new year. The above is a pallet I painted that hangs over our faux fireplace in there. I can’t wait to take this room on…it’s like a dark cave in there right now.

And that about wraps it up! So happy you stopped by today. And thanks bunches for having me over, Meegan! Loves!
Love you too, my friend!!
See all the talents and creativity Kristi has!  Isn’t she amazing?  I knew you would love her as much as I do.

Everyone come back next week for another post in Field Trip Friday from Barbara at Chase The Star.  Woot woot!
