Field Trip Friday with Michele from Shelstring

June 27, 2014 By Meegan 2 Comments

It’s Field Trip Friday!  One of my favorite blogging days of the week.  Today, I have a Field Trip Friday with Michele from Shelstring. Michele is a sweetie full of talent.  She has a beautiful family, home, and LOTS of DIY inspiration.  I KNOW you will love her as much as I do.  Enjoy Field Trip Friday with Michele from Shelstring…

Hello! My name is Michele. I’m so excited to be here on “Field Trip Friday” with Meegan. She is such a sweet person and I enjoy reading her field trips, so I was delighted when she asked me to be a part of one today.

I’m a mother of seven children and devoted wife.
I live in a little suburb of Eugene Oregon called Santa Clara and blog over at Shelstring (you can read more about that here). When we first saw our house, we thought it looked like the Brady Bunch house. We searched for our home for a year by the time we finally came upon this one, and I knew it was the one the moment I stepped inside. Immediately I saw the potential it had. Although we’ve worked on it ever since we bought it nine years ago, we still have a lot to do. Part of the reason is that I never feel finished once I complete a project and find myself swinging full circle back to where I started after I’m given a little time.
So I’ll show you a little peek inside, which isn’t going to be that impressive without the “before shots”, but it will be a little taste, at least, which is more than I’ve ever shared before. I’m not sure you’re going to feel priviledged since this is the first time I’ve ever blogged about my house, but I’m willing to give it a go. So come on in, we’re fortunate to be visiting on a sunny day-
I love when spring comes, the first thing I do is visit my favorite nursery and fill up all my flower pots.
This is the first thing I say when I open the door to visitors. You can read all about my
Metal framed chalkboard here .
Our entry console dons a lamp I made from an heirloom butter churn my mother gave me. You can read about that at Live Creatively Inspired , where I guest post each month.
If you look straight on from the front door, you are looking into the dining area where you will see one of my most recent projects. This is the Pine hutch I painted with homemade chalk paint. This hutch holds the china I inherited from my family. It compliments the new beadboard and shaker style framed windows I completed simutaniously in the spring, just in time for guests.

One of the first things we did in our house was remodel the kitchen. I will be sharing a full tour on my blog in my Summer Home Tour Series at the end of the summer, hopefully with the before and afters. Just to give a little insight, we pushed the wall the microwave is on out two feet and made the mud room a little smaller so that we could open up the kitchen a little more. My husband and a friend installed the cabinets and I tiled the backsplash. {One of my favorite things to DIY.}
I just got finished re-organizing our hutch area. The cookbooks were getting a little sloppy and the flour and sugar were on the counter by the sink making it quite a walk when baking.
The mud room was a blank canvas. It was just empty when we moved in. We moved the wall as close to the window as possible when we renovated the kitchen to give it a little more space. Although I installed the beadboard and created the seating area, I didn’t really complete the room until this week. The chalkboard wall was a project I did last summer for the beginning of the school year.
I really had a lot of fun putting this room together. I wanted happy cheerful colors since it is gray and rainy so much of the time here.
The mudroom leads to the outside where I spend at least an hour a day in my gardens. I’m a California girl born and raised, so I don’t want to miss any sunlight when it’s out. One of the things I enjoy about the outdoors is that I often feel inspired to create something.
Here are a few of my favorite outdoor projects:
Baby to Potter- changing table turned potting bench. Here's how I did it! shelstringblog.blogspot.com

Just Sittin'- log leg bench designed by my son, built by me! shelstringblog.blogspot.com

Water Heater Draft Turned Tier Planter
And a little more seating to enjoy…

Because of my love for the outdoor projects, I often find myself bringing the outdoors in.
Here’s an example:
A Planked Wall– made from our old fence boards
These are just a few of the types of things you will find me doing. I hope you will come by and visit me at Shelstring. I sure have loved visiting with all of you and hope you will also check out Meegan’s home tour on my Summer Home Tour Series. Thank you Meegan for inviting me! I hope you all have a wonderful Friday! ;)
Was I right?  Did you love Michele and her amazing talents?  Isn’t she full of inspiration and creativity?
Thank YOU, Michele for sharing your lovely home and ideas.
Thanks to everyone for stopping by for Field Trip Friday with Michele from Shelstring.

Summer Condo Balcony Makeover

July 7, 2014 By Meegan 5 Comments

Good Morning and Happy Monday to everyone! I have had a lot of creative time to work on my Summer Condo Balcony Makeover.  As I shopped, I could visually see how this was all going to come together.

Since I had been looking at ideas for an outdoor space, my mind was reeling with ideas.  Even though our space is only 6’x9′, I KNEW I could create a one of a kind space for us.

Summer Condo Balcony Makeover

Creating a Summer Condo Balcony Makeover has been my goal for the past 2 weeks.  I am exited to share the transformation with you.

Summer Cole Slaw with Poppy Seed Dressing and Cashews

May 6, 2014 By Meegan 4 Comments

It’s nice to be with you on this hot, humid day. It has been hot and rainy most of the week here in Vegas.  Don’t get me wrong-I LOVE the Summer rain. BUT, it does keep me out of the pool with the lightning storms. Boo!

This blog post has been updated in August 2025.

One good thing about the weather is that I crave fresh veggies and fruit.  What your favorite Summer “go-to” recipe?  Mine is Summer Cole Slaw with Poppy Seed Dressing and Cashews. Yummy!

This recipe is fresh, crisp, sweet and savory all in one bite.

Field Trip Friday with Ann From On Sutton Place

July 18, 2014 By Meegan 2 Comments

It’s the time of week that makes me so happy.  It’s Field Trip Friday.  Today we have Ann visiting What Meegan Makes.  I am thrilled to have Ann on my blog.  Especially for all of you to see her talent and creativity.  It’s your turn Ann…

Hello! I’m Ann and I write the lifestyle website called On Sutton Place. I’m a reluctant empty nester who got a wild idea a few years ago to start a blog that focused on all the various aspects of my home. The house itself, the garden, the porches, the kitchen and the family that lives there. What started as something to fill the empty hours has turned into a full time job that I love. I am a DIY, self-taught decorator and a firm believer in surrounding yourself with things you love.

When Meegan invited me to visit her readers and tell a bit about myself I wasn’t quite sure what to say. So I’ll just start from the beginning. When I decided to start a blog, I had no idea what I was doing. Deep down I knew I just had to try. I was a magazine junkie and devoured every issue of several different home and garden publications.

About Ann Drake | On Sutton Place

My sewing skills came in very handy as did my ability to use a paint brush. I wasn’t afraid of hard work and I will be the first to tell you that hard work really does pay off.  For more on that read The Story of Our House.

I love a collected-over-time and classic look…but if I really like something that doesn’t quite fit, I do my best to make it work. Even if it isn’t the right style or color. I decorate in layers so it’s easy to change the look of a room by just switching out a layer or two.

I especially love being in my kitchen. I am a very basic cook and I enjoy making family dinners. A good place to start to see what comes out of my kitchen is Family Favorites. I also share some basic baking tips that I’ve picked up over the years. The perfect recipe, in my opinion, has no more than 5 or 6 ingredients. Simple is almost always best!

Other than my kitchen, my two favorite places to hang out are my yard and my sewing room. We’ll start with the yard. It’s come a long way since we moved in and I recently rounded up my ten best gardening posts on what I’ve learned. Nothing makes me happier than decorating with flowers from my garden.

Shortly after I started my blog, I opened an online shop called Sutton Place Designs. I make and sell textile home furnishings from vintage fabrics, ticking and linen. I usually list items in my shop once a month and always let my readers know on my blog and through my social media. I’d love to have any of Meegan’s readers stop over and take a look around.

So that’s the story of my blog in a nutshell. I want to thank Meegan for having me and invite you all to stop and visit On Sutton Place anytime!
