Ideas for Decorating with Sand and Shells

May 8, 2014 By Meegan 8 Comments

Happy Thursday!  I am excited to be here with you.  I have a few Ideas for Decorating with Sand and Shells, today.  I hope you can incorporate them into your home decor.

I told you a few weeks ago how much I like collecting shells.  While my son, his wife and their baby were in Bermuda last month, they brought me back some amazing shells and sand.  The bottle of sand was found while my son was scuba diving.  How cool is that???

I like various shells, their colors and shapes.  They each seem to have their own personality, don’t they???

I have many shells of this type, but never one this big.  Can you believe the spikes on the bottom one?  Crazy.

Bermuda is known for it’s pink sand.  I love all the flecks of pink in the bottle.

And then the tiny little shells inside are a perfect touch.

Spring Shelves 2014

April 14, 2014 By Meegan 7 Comments

Wasn’t I JUST sharing my Christmas decor?  And now it’s time for my Spring Shelves 2014.  Whew!

But before that,  I want to thank so many of you that left me sweet messages after my What Makes Meegan post. Your thoughts, experiences and sweet words melted my heart.  Thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Now on to something a little more fun today.  Okay.  We all know how much I like things that are blue and/or vintage, right?  Those are the two items I tried to incorporate in my Spring Shelves this year.

I didn’t buy anything special or new.  I decided to shop my house.  I had about 5 different ideas set-up, until I finally was happy with this.

How I Found My Style

April 7, 2014 By Meegan 18 Comments

How I Found My Style???  Have YOU ever thought about that question?   I would LOVE to share my answer and results with you.

What would be the driving influence to my decorating style?  Growing up around my grandparents and their vintage home filled with antiques, shells and comfort, my style began to be shaped.  Entering their home, I felt “at home”.  I have longed to create that same feeling in my own home.

How I Found My Style

Welcome to our home.  I like to think of it as vintage beach cottage.  Collecting and looking for items to create my Las Vegas condo into a vintage beach cottage has become a hobby and fun pastime for me.

Thrifted Plates Hung with Hot Glue

As I shop thrift shops, I am attracted to items and accessories, like these plates that remind me of that feeling I felt in Grandma’s home.

How I Found My Style

If I find something that I like, but it isn’t quite the color I desire, paint is my favorite way to change up or bring in the vintage look I want.  For instance, on my living room book shelves each one of these book ends, planter, and cloche’ were purchased in a brown color.  Using turquoise mist paint, I enjoyed painting and sanding them to fit my vintage beach cottage style.  Yes, the books are vintage, too.

How I found My Style

Keeping Grandma’s vintage brooches in an apothecary jar remind me of fond memories playing dress-up in her home.

How I Found My Style

May favorite spot in our home would be our bedroom.  I am blessed to have my grandparents bedroom set as my own.  Using turquoise mist and antique white paint, I made over the whole bedroom set to fit the motif of a vintage beach cottage.

How I Found My Style

One of my favorite places to visit is the ocean.  I could sit there for hours listening to the sounds of the waves crashing, the birds chirping, and people laughing.  I collect shells and display them in our home to remind me of my ocean memories.

How I Found My Style

I like to have lots of white and blue furniture with a touch of dark wood.  To me, it looks vintage, inviting, and “cottagey”.

How I Found My Style

My “girl” print has been in our home for years.  And, yes, I painted the frame and the mat to fit my vintage look.  Our whole family enjoys this print.  We try to imagine what she is thinking and/or how she is feeling.  I think she is waiting for someone she is in love with.  What are your ideas as to what she is thinking?

How I found My Style

My vintage craft cupboard is one of my favorite pieces of furniture.  My friend was on her way to the dumpster with it!  I know! I snatched it up and began painting it.  It was a perfect piece to help me with a vintage beach cottage atmosphere.

How I Found My Style

Grandma always had watering cans that she REALLY used to take care of her flowers.  I like my watering can filled with dried hydrangeas.

How I found My Style

My white shelves in our kitchen are a fun focal point.  I like to bring out my vintage milk bottles and blue Ball jars for another way to showcase my style.

How I found my Style

Finding this vintage buffet was like the “icing on the cake” to finish my vintage beach cottage home in the desert.  Yep, you guessed it, I painted it once I got it home.  BUT, it has been my most challenging project to date.  Finding a color and painting and re-painting it to FINALLY fit in the right space was truly a challenge.

I hope you have enjoyed how I found my style.  Through my grandparent’s I learned what I like and what gives me comfort at home.

Have you thought about the question: How I Found My Style? For yourself?  It’s a fun and interesting way to think about your taste and design process.

Make it a meaningful Monday

Spring Inspired Shelf

March 25, 2014 By Meegan 21 Comments

Happy Tuesday!  I am REALLY excited to share my Spring Inspired Shelf today.

I am inspired  by other bloggers such as: Craftberry Bush, Dreamy Whites, and Laughing with Angels.  I love their photography, their vision and taste.

After browsing through their blogs and using my own components and creativity, I worked to make my Spring Inspired Shelf my very own.

I am constantly looking at my Spring inspired shelf.  There is so much to see.

Each angle brings a whole new perspective.  The stick with the nest is a real hummingbird’s nest.

Stacking my tea cups and saucers on my wooden pedestal adds depth and height.  Love the marking and detail on the wood, don’t you?  Moss also gives a feel of refreshed life.

My bird and moss filled terracotta pot has not been aged by me in anyway, other than using it year after year.  The cracks and the patina add to the character of the whole shelf look.

Oh, I really like the bird house.  I like the dark, weathered wood and a little bit more moss.  Did you see the bird feathers???

Another pot I have had for years.  No need to prime or age it myself.  The flowers are real. Don’t they look great with moss surrounding them?   (I will share my secret with you later this week on how I did this)

Above the shelf hang a small portion of my tea cup and saucer collection.  The red cups were hand made and painted by my Grandma.  The cup with painted flowers hanging lowest on the left was also made by her.  Again, I love the look of fresh green moss for a Spring look.

Did you see the real birds nest in the highest cup?  It’s a hummbird’s nest.  So sweet.

The saucers were both thrift finds.  Aren’t they so pretty?

Here is a closer look at the tea cups.  Grandma would smile about this look.  She would probably say, “Well, would you look at that Sugar-pie.”

The creamer has a fresh rose and leaves to fill it.

I used one of my vintage bottles as a vase and to add height.  Going with the moss theme, I thought it would look good with a little in the vase as well.  To keep my flowers fresh, I use these tips.

Spring has sprung in our home over the last week.  The leaves are popping out of the branches.  The grass looks even greener.  And my Spring inspired shelf is set for the season.

I am so happy to have you stop by during your busy life to visit my blog.  I read every comment.  They always make me smile.

Make it a terrific Tuesday.
