Things That Make My House A Home

February 27, 2015 By Meegan 19 Comments

Welcome to What Meegan Makes today.  I am honored to have been asked by Porch.com  for me to share things that make my house a home.

I am excited to share my happy place and…

Things That Make My House A Home

Living Room Book Shelves

I love these book shelves for many reasons.  The first is the colors, blue and white.  (And, yes, I  painted them myself.)

Birds and Birdhouses in Home Decor

October 9, 2014 By Meegan 1 Comment

Good Morning and Happy Thursday!  Things are getting back to normal around our house.  I am doing laundry, sewing, and cooking for Hubby since I was gone for so long. Now I am back and ready to show you Birds and Birdhouses, My Collection (Maybe an Obsession)

I have always liked birds. Birds and Birdhouses in Home Decor. Wow.  While I was thinking about writing this post, I realized just how many birds and birdhouses I have.

Using Birds & Bird Houses in Home Decor

Our living room book shelves actually have several hints of birds and bird houses.

We also have a few bird feathers from beach trips in some sand.  Great memories.

Birds and Birdhouses in Home Decor

I LOVE my birdies.  There are 21 to be exact.  And I like that because we have 21 grandkiddos.  Perfect, huh?  I like how each bird has it’s own unique look, just like the grandkiddos.

I like birds so much, I make my own bird’s nest from book pages.

My sweet green birdie is one of the first bird purchases I made.  I love the various colors on his body.

Birds and Birdhouses in Home Decor

You may have seen me use my hummingbird nests before.  They are sentimental to me, because they were from my mother-in-law.  She passed away from cancer 5 1/2 years ago.  I will be sharing her hummingbird experience later this month as I celebrate Cancer Awareness.

Birds and Birdhouses in Home Decor

My large white bird was brown, but somehow it was painted white (hehehe) Doesn’t it blend well with the hummingbird nests?

Another ceramic white  bird has perched on top of my favorite candlestick.

In our guest bathroom you will find a colorful pink bird to coordinate with my grandma’s hand made wall decor.

This cutie patutie has found a home right near my vintage bird cage.

Birds and Birdhouses in Home Decor

I have to tell you a story about this birdcage.  I have a 3 year old grand daughter that lives close by.  She LOVES the birdcage and the ceramic bird.  She worries that the bird is out of his cage, so she will often place inside.  I LOVE that.

One day while visiting she asked, “How old is the bird cage?”  I said, “About 100 years old.”  Her reply was, “OH, as old as you!”  Is that too funny, or what??  I have laughed about that for a long time.

Birds and Birdhouses in Home Decor

The lights on my birdhouse are always lit up when we have visitors.

Birds and Birdhouses in Home Decor

I have been known to make coordinating bird houses for our Christmas tree.

Lastly, my stenciled birdies reside in my laundry closet, so I can see them everyday.

So you see Birds and Birdhouses, My Collection (Maybe an Obsession) is a fun and creative way to add variety to home decor.  You don’t need to have a cottage, farmhouse, or even a traditional home to add birds and birdhouses.  They can work anywhere or any space.

Do YOU have birds as decor in your home?

Thanks for stopping by and making my blog a part of your day!

Each week I will be sharing some of my favorite blogs with you.  I hope you will visit their blogs and follow along as they share their BEST with you.  Visit the links below for more inspiration.

Terracotta Pot Turned Vase

April 1, 2014 By Meegan 7 Comments

Happy April First!!  Can you believe we are already in April?  Me, either.  This year is moving so fast.  BUT, the good thing about April, Spring is here.  Blossoms, flowers, and fresh new life is everywhere you look.

Last week I posted my Spring Inspired Shelf.

The terracotta pot turned vase is so simple and looks perfect for Spring.  I would love to show you how quick and easy my terracotta pot turned vase is to make.

What you will need:

1 terracotta pot

1 bag of reindeer moss

1 jar small enough to fit in the pot snug

Fresh cut flowers

I have mentioned before that I do not have a great thumb.  BUT, I do love plants and flowers in our home.  For me toattain the look of  fresh flowers growing in our home I transformed a terracotta pot turned vase.

Using a worn terracotta pot, I placed a mason jar inside the pot.  I used a jar small enough that it fit snug at the bottom of the pot and you can’t see it over the top of the pot.  I then filled the jar with water.  Easy, so far, right?

My next 2 components to use were moss and fresh cut flowers.  I wanted moss around the edges of my pot to appear as Spring was popping up on my shelf.

Next, I sprayed the moss with water so it would be pliable.  I placed the moss around the edges of my pot and in-between the jar.  I like the look of a little moss hanging over the sides, too.

I then put my fresh cut flowers in the water-filled jar.

I now have fresh flowers “growing” in our home with my terracotta pot turned vase.  Easy peasy and a new fresh look for my terracotta pot.

Thanks for popping in today.  For more Spring ideas look here.

I hope you have been inspired and will make your our Spring themed shelf or terracotta pot.

Make it a terrific Tuesday!

Spring Inspired Shelf

March 25, 2014 By Meegan 21 Comments

Happy Tuesday!  I am REALLY excited to share my Spring Inspired Shelf today.

I am inspired  by other bloggers such as: Craftberry Bush, Dreamy Whites, and Laughing with Angels.  I love their photography, their vision and taste.

After browsing through their blogs and using my own components and creativity, I worked to make my Spring Inspired Shelf my very own.

I am constantly looking at my Spring inspired shelf.  There is so much to see.

Each angle brings a whole new perspective.  The stick with the nest is a real hummingbird’s nest.

Stacking my tea cups and saucers on my wooden pedestal adds depth and height.  Love the marking and detail on the wood, don’t you?  Moss also gives a feel of refreshed life.

My bird and moss filled terracotta pot has not been aged by me in anyway, other than using it year after year.  The cracks and the patina add to the character of the whole shelf look.

Oh, I really like the bird house.  I like the dark, weathered wood and a little bit more moss.  Did you see the bird feathers???

Another pot I have had for years.  No need to prime or age it myself.  The flowers are real. Don’t they look great with moss surrounding them?   (I will share my secret with you later this week on how I did this)

Above the shelf hang a small portion of my tea cup and saucer collection.  The red cups were hand made and painted by my Grandma.  The cup with painted flowers hanging lowest on the left was also made by her.  Again, I love the look of fresh green moss for a Spring look.

Did you see the real birds nest in the highest cup?  It’s a hummbird’s nest.  So sweet.

The saucers were both thrift finds.  Aren’t they so pretty?

Here is a closer look at the tea cups.  Grandma would smile about this look.  She would probably say, “Well, would you look at that Sugar-pie.”

The creamer has a fresh rose and leaves to fill it.

I used one of my vintage bottles as a vase and to add height.  Going with the moss theme, I thought it would look good with a little in the vase as well.  To keep my flowers fresh, I use these tips.

Spring has sprung in our home over the last week.  The leaves are popping out of the branches.  The grass looks even greener.  And my Spring inspired shelf is set for the season.

I am so happy to have you stop by during your busy life to visit my blog.  I read every comment.  They always make me smile.

Make it a terrific Tuesday.

A Christmas Tree Home Tour

December 17, 2013 By Meegan 9 Comments

Hello Hello!!  Christmas is just days away and nine bloggers and I have a beautiful and creative Christmas Tour of Homes for you.  Thanks to Rachel from Like a Saturday for putting it altogether!   To see the full tour schedule and to link up on December 20th, visit Rachel at Like a Saturday.

Christmas tour of homes

If you are coming from Kayla’s blog Home Coming-WELCOME!!  I am so happy to have you here!!

stop 3 home coming

Today, I am thrilled to share our Christmas Trees with a Christmas Tree Home Tour.  I LOVE Christmas trees.  But our 950 sq foot condo is too tiny for the size tree I want, so I have 4 little trees that bring the Christmas feeling into our home.

A Christmas Tree Home Tour

Each tree is unique and adds to the feel and look of our home.

This first tree is in our living room window.

It is filled with vintage “Shiny Brites”, snowflakes and icicles.

I used a glitter and crystal filled garland to lay around the tree as well.

The tree sits in my fleur box, along with the natural and glittered spheres from Pier One.

This white ornament is special because it was sent from one of my blog readers!!  Isn’t she sweet??

My next tree resides in our bedroom.  The colors are blue (one of my fave colors), silver and gold, with crystals scattered throughout.

With more vintage gold “Shiny Brites”,  I was able to get the look and feel I wanted for our bedroom.

The bedroom tree sits in a barn wood box. and surrounded with burlap.

You can see the cracks in some of the glass ornaments, showing the wear and age on them.

“Merry Christmas” adorns the top of the tree, as a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.

One of my Christmas trees is also in the living room,  sitting in a vintage reproduction sleigh.   I decorated the tree with a pine cone garland that I made last year.

The Santa and toys were crocheted by my grandma.  Since she has passed on, they hold special meaning to me each year when I pull them out of the box.

Doesn’t Santa look excited to deliver toys on Christmas Eve??

Last, but certainly not least, is my DIY Flocked Tree in a Terracotta pot.  Having it sit right by my vintage birdhouse is a perfect place for my bird ornaments.

My Christmas Tree Home Tour has been so fun to share with you.  Each one makes me smile every time I see them and especially when they are lit up.  Be sure to also see my WHOLE Christmas Home Tour.

Thanks SO much for coming over for the Christmas Tour of Homes!  I KNOW you will enjoy each and every home as much as I have.

Your next stop on the tour will be with Gracie from Kitchen Table Art, tomorrow morning!!  You will not be disappointed.

I’ve Got The Monday Blues For A Little Christmas Shelf

December 2, 2013 By Meegan 2 Comments

[slideshow_deploy id=’5749′]

I’ve Got The Monday Blues For A Little Christmas Shelf and I am excited to share it with you today!  You KNOW that I LOVE blue, right?  I have a shelf that I thrifted, refreshed and now it hangs in our “office”.  I decided to add a little Christmas cheer by adding a few things I already own.

You may also know how much I like to use empty frames to decorate our home.  This shelf is no exception.  Staggering 4 of my favorite frames I began to set up my shelf.

I've Got The Monday Blues For a Little Christmas Shelf I bought tiny birdhouses at Jo-Ann and painted them with some of my favorite blues and whites last year.  While the paint was still wet, I sprinkled iridescent glitter on each one.  SO EASY!

I made the light blue tulle wreath for our son’s wedding from an embroidery hoop.  EASY!!  I found the “let it snow” sign in the dollar section at Target.  (Gotta love the dollar section, right?)

I've Got The Monday Blues For a Little Christmas Shelf I also made the small blue/green frame with the flower.  I found the brooch at Hobby Lobby.  I enjoy using this frame all year long.  I really like the addition of the glitter and how each birdhouse shimmers in the light.

And one last look at my Little Christmas Shelf.  While I am working on blog posts, I can look up and it makes me smile to see a little Christmas Cheer.

What do you have in your office for some Christmas Cheer?

I’ve Got The Monday Blues For A Little Christmas Shelf, do you, too???

Thanks for stopping by today and making my day a little brighter…

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

October 1, 2013 By Meegan 20 Comments

Happy First Day of October!!  It’s time for What Meegan Makes Fall Tour and I am inviting you along!!  I can hardly wait to share my Fall Tour with you.  I mixed old and new projects, fresh and fake pumpkins, along with some ideas I can’t resist sharing with you on the What Meegan Makes Fall Tour.

So, whatta you say???  Let’s get this tour on the road!!

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

Welcome to our Fall Home…

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

AS you know, I LOVE my book shelves.  They are definitely a focal point in our home.  I have enjoyed adding some Fall decor to the book shelves and the whole house.

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

Pine cones and colored marbles in a vessel make me smile.  I get the touch of blue I like with the rustic and natural look of the pine cone.

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

Even a shoe mold needs a little Fall, too.  Don’t you think???

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

Using some blue jars, I am able to add rustic elements for a Fall feel and look.

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

I LOVE my Gather Banner.  It finishes off with such a good feel of soft feathers and again the rustic look with pine cones.

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

The artichokes are real.  They are dried and add a little more variety of color for my Fall look.  Filling my gold vase with more blue and turquoise marbles adds color and texture.

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

Pine cones atop my candle sticks along with a thrifted bottle are a perfect addition the the top of the book shelves.  The water can was a gift from hubby.  He likes the galvanized look as much as I do.  The cloche is a thrift find.  Pine cones seem to be one of the main elements in our home, don’t they?

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

Adding more blue bottles, my bling pumpkin, and more pine cones finish off the whole look of the book shelves.

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

The chest my grandpa made is topped with blues, greens, oranges, and reds.  Don’t you just love the insulator colors???

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

This cute owl was a great find at Target.  He looks cute on a candle holder.  Just perfect for the chest, right?

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

Sitting on my $15 coffee table, I couldn’t have my Fall tour without my book page pumpkin.  As you can tell, I like adding the blue marbles and pine cones just about everywhere.

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

This jar is one of my favorites in the house right now!  I had a strand of berries, wadded it up and literally crammed it into the jar.  And it looks crazy good!!

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

Any chance I get, I use my little bird bath.  I love filling it with glass drawer pulls, vintage keys, and a ceramic birdie.

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

Moving towards the kitchen you will see my Grandpa’s croquet box filled with various flowers, leaves and berries.  This croquet box is an all-time fave of my readers.  I have fun using my creativity to fill it for each season and holiday.

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

And now we have the kitchen shelves.  Since I don’t have a mantel, I love to use these as my mantel.  I can honestly say, this is my favorite part of our home right now.

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

Mixing fake and real pumpkins, with an acorn squash or two, a few berries, more pine cones,  and a wreath, I am in Fall Heaven!

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

The shutter was a thrift find.  I brought it home and made it vintage looking.  It is the ideal way to top off the shelves.

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

Can you see why this is my favorite spot??

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

The acorn squash sets atop a thrifted candle holder.  It looks like it was made for it doesn’t it??

What Meegan Makes Fall Tour

Thanks for joining me on What Meegan Makes fall Tour!  It has been a treat to have you here and share just a bit of my idea of what Fall feels like to me.

It is always a pleasure to have you here!   What are your favorite decorations and colors for this Fall???  I would love to hear all about it.

Thanks, again for visiting What Meegan Makes Fall Tour.  I hope you come back again soon.

Make it a terrific Tuesday!

Six Easy Fall Decor Ideas

September 3, 2013 By Meegan 26 Comments

Oh my!!  Fall is upon us.  The skies are filled with clouds and the weather is cooling down (well, a little). I thought it would be fun to share with you  Six Easy Fall Decor Ideas.

Last year I chose to decorate my bookshelves and my kitchen shelves as a focal point. I decided to use traditional Fall colors in my living room and my bookshelf.  Then I gathered blues, browns and whites on my kitchen shelves for a whole different look. Using 2 different colors and styles, you can see how easy, simple and creative Fall decor can be.

Six Easy Fall Decor Ideas

My first choice is going with all whites, browns and a touch of blue (you know how I love blue!)
