Decoupaged Target Bookcase

August 28, 2014 By Meegan 23 Comments

Happy Thursday! Today is a really fun blogging day.  Especially if you like DIYs, Furniture and Decoupage.  I have teamed up with 10+ bloggers to share our best decoupage furniture makeovers.  I have been working on my Decoupaged Target Bookcase for a few days, and now I get to show you what I came up with.

Themed Furniture Makeover Day

To start off with I bought this bookcase at Target for $20.  The whole idea was to give Hubby some office and school space.

I added some blue scrapbook paper to the back to add depth.  But it was still just a Target bookcase.

After weeks of ideas running through my head, I opted to do what I liked best. I thought about (and tried wrapping paper and faux wood paper) But I just did not like the look. OH! AND it was a MAJOR FAIL! Finally, I thought, “Well, what DO YOU like best?” Um that would be book pages, right?  DUH!

So I began my project by adding book pages to  make a Decoupaged Target Bookcase.

Here she is! My Decoupaged Target Bookcase.

I used Martha Stewart Decoupage for this project. It works great and dries quickly.

As I started layering my 1949 dictionary book pages on the bookcase, I was thinking about what I could put in back of the shelves, where the blue scrapbook paper had been.

I worked carefully and meticulously to cover the whole bookcase.  I also liked to show pictures of some of the definitions.  It added character.

Once I was ready to do the back, I found some vintage looking scrapbook paper.  I didn’t want this bookcase to be TOO feminine, as my Hubby uses it for his school supplies.  When I saw the vintage clocks, I KNEW it was just perfect for the Decoupaged Target Bookcase.
On some of the other shelves I used old world map paper.  Since he is majoring in History, this was ideal.

The shelf now reminds me of a display case I might see in an antique store or boutique.

I am so happy with my “new” bookcase.  It is just the look I was hoping for.  Hubby is pretty pleased, as well.
So when you stroll through Target and you see a plain white, boring, and pretty generic bookcase…Think about all your choices and you can make your own Decoupaged Target Bookcase for yourself!
P,S. When your project is dry be sure to cover it with polyurethane, as a water protectant.

Take a few minutes and visit all the other talented bloggers that have used decoupage to makeover a piece of furniture, too.  You will be impressed. I guarantee it.
Make it a Decoupage Thursday!

Oh Meegan, this reminds me of old shelves and bookcases my grandma would cover with newspaper. Now sure what she used as the glue. Don’t think decoupage glue was around back then. Thanks for the memories. You did an amazing job! ~Jeanette
