Things That Make My House A Home

February 27, 2015 By Meegan 19 Comments

Welcome to What Meegan Makes today.  I am honored to have been asked by Porch.com  for me to share things that make my house a home.

I am excited to share my happy place and…

Things That Make My House A Home

Living Room Book Shelves

I love these book shelves for many reasons.  The first is the colors, blue and white.  (And, yes, I  painted them myself.)

The other reason is the many special memories and experiences on them.  I am all about having memorable pieces in our home.  They bring me happiness and joy.

Livingroom Book Shelves Gold Vase

This unique and gorgeous gold vase was a Mother’s day gift from one of our daughters.  Filling it with green and blue marbles makes me think of ocean water and the beach.  One of my other favorite places.

Living Room BookShelves shells

I am also a collector of shells.  I have many from all around the world.

My youngest son brought this back from Bermuda, just for me.  Isn’t it beautiful?

Living Room BookShelves

Having the nests on my bookshelves is vital.  They are both from a hummingbird that lived on the deck of my mother-in-law’s home.  At the time, my mother-in-law had cancer; and she would look out on her deck every morning to see “Flo” (That’s what she named her) nesting and taking care of her babies.  She told me that seeing “Flo” everyday gave her the will to live.  As you can  probably tell, I LOVE these nests for so many reasons.

Livingroom BookShelves and Statuette

This statuette was a gift from another daughter for my a birthday.

She has rested on the bookshelves ever since.  It is a good reminder of what is important.

Living Room Bookshelves sand and feathers

My Hubby and I enjoy the ocean.  The sand, the smells, the sky, fresh air and the birds that glide above the beach.  This glass vase is a perfect reminder of wonderful times with family and friends.

Livingroom Bookshelves and Pictures

Having these two pictures above the shelves reminds us of those we love.

The picture on the left is my FATHER at age 3 yrs.  Funny story: His mother was hoping for a girl after two sons, so she grew his hair long until he started school.

The picture on the right is my mother-in-laws high school senior picture.  Don’t you love how they use to color black and white photos of the 1940’s?

Livingroombook shelves

The piece of coral and lava rock from our visit to Maui is another beautiful memory Hubby and I shared together.

Living roombook shelves

The Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam was a book that Hubby’s grandfather read out of while he was “courting” his fiance’ in her “parlor”.  He would quote poems and read to her every night.  Isn’t that so sweet?

Living Room Book Shelvesclock

This shelf makes me smile many times over.  Not only was the clock given to me by one of our sons, but this is where our high school yearbooks and baby books rest.  We have fun looking at how young we once were, and how styles, fashion, and people have changed.

Living Room Collage

Filling our bookshelves with mementos of vacations, gifts, and precious memories is something I have always done.

It’s the Things That Make My House A Home.

It gives me a feeling of love and comfort.

Living Room Book Shelves Full

I would love to hear what you have in your home that gives you that same feeling.  Is it mementos, pictures or gifts?

Thank you Porch.com  for inviting me to share my happy place, or the things that make my house a home.  I am looking forward to working with them in the near future and often.

A sweet collection of what home is all about. I got a kick out of your dad’s photo, as my grandmother did the same thing. I have a photo of my dad, as a toddler, in a white dress. Just for that, she was blessed with another son.

Your bookshelves are beautifully styled, but it’s the personal memories behind each item that makes them even prettier! Thanks for a great read!
