How To Decoupage a Book Cover

December 4, 2015 By Meegan 16 Comments

I am excited today because I am going to show you a project that I have been wanting to do for a long time. And, now since I have finally done it, I can show YOU How To Decoupage a Book Cover and create a picture on the spines of your books. It is a fun way to add detail and texture to any bookshelf, home or office.

How To Decoupage Book Spines to Create a Picture

I am excited, so let’s get started…

Okay, so let me show you How To Decoupage a Book Cover.

I started off by purchasing 3 Reader’s Digest Books. I didn’t care what color my books were BUT I did want the spines to be almost exactly the same size.Thrifted Readers Digest

This is what I used for my Decoupaged Books:

3 readers digest books

4 pieces of scrapbook paper (with a scene)

mod podge ultra matte chalk

folk art chalk paint  (I wanted this to paint the covers when I am done)

paint brush

scissors

You can see that my scrapbook paper has a picture or scene on it. I want to create that same picture on my book spines.

I measured my book spines, and over lapped the sides by 2-3 inches.

After they were cut, I folded them to be able to fit the book spines.

Using the Mod Podge Ultra Matte Chalk, I “painted the scrapbook paper.

Since the scrapbook paper was a heavier weight than most, I found it worked best if I brushed the Mod Podge Ultra Chalk on BOTH the paper and the book.

I allowed them to dry for a few hours. As you can see I now have a “picture” on my book spines. I LOVE it.

Decoupage Book Spines and Paint Book Covers to Match Your Decor

For a final touch, I painted to book covers with Folk Art Chalk Ultra Matte Acrylic Paint. Doesn’t the paint give the books the finished look they needed?

Have YOU thought of painting book covers before? The book is still in tact and has a beautiful picture on the spine.

I am so pleased with my “NEW” Books. It was not as hard as I thought it would be. They would even make great gifts, wouldn’t they?
