How To Make a Flaky Pie Crust

As a young baker I always wanted to know How To Make a Flaky Pie Crust. Mine always came out like hard biscuits or so saturated with shortening it was like eating lard out of can.

You get the picture, right? No taste, or flavorful, or sometimes even eatable.

I thought maybe some of you were like me. A young baker learning how to bake a flaky pie crust. SO I want to give you a starting chance and show you How To Make a Flaky Pie Crust.

Let’s get started with this basic recipe. FYI-This recipe can be used for any kind of pie. Today I am showing a crust for a cream pie.

Pie Crust

Makes 2 10 inch pie crusts.

2 C flour 1 C shortening

Mix with a pastry blender, and add 1 tsp salt.

Combine and add flour mixture with:

1/3 C milk

1 T vinegar

Mix with a pastry blender. (this is the trick) Take your time blending the flour and shortening. Do not “knead” it. This is what will turn it into a hard biscuit type of crust. * or even worse- like a rock) You want flaky and light.

With a rolling pin roll dough on floured surface in a round shape.

*Again, do not knead the dough, but carefully blend it together.*

 

Bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes, until light brown and crisp.

After laying crust in pie pan, poke crust with a fork all around the bottom and sides.

When your crust has completely cooled, and you are using this as a cream filled pie-now is the time to add your filling and chill until set.

This recipe makes 2-10 inch pie crusts.
