How To Make a Rustic Naked Cake

March 17, 2016 By Meegan 4 Comments

Today I couldn’t be more excited to show you How To Make a Rustic Naked Cake. Have you ever heard of one? Or seen one?

They are pretty popular right now and relatively easy to make.

{Meegan’s Rustic Naked Cake}

Ingredients and Directions                              2 boxes  white cake mix (follow ingredients needed for each cake mix IE; egg whites, water, oil)

2 recipes butter cream frosting

1 jar raspberry spread or preserves

6 inch size cake pan

2 Tablespoons shortening

1 cup flour

wax paper

scissors

5-1-gallon freezer bags

bread knife

fresh flowers of your choice

Instructions:

This recipe will take 1 1/2 cake mixes. (I used the other half of cake mix to make cup cakes.)

Prepare cake pan with a very thin layer of shortening, dust bottom and sides with flour. Then with your scissors cut out a circle of wax paper the same size as the cake pan bottom. Place in bottom of pan.

Pour batter in pan till about 1/3 full. Each layer will take between 15-18 minutes to bake. Use a tooth pick to make sure each layer is completely baked.

(Make sure that the batter is not sticking to the pick, and comes out clean from the baked cake.)

Bake 5 layers of the white cake mix, making sure the cake pan is completely cooled off and clean before pouring more batter for another cake.

THIS IS VITAL:

After carefully taking each cake out of the pan, take wax paper off, then cool cake on a cooling rack.

“Crumb” cake. Which means: using your fingers to lightly brush crumbs off around the edges and sides.

Place each cake in a gallon Ziploc bag. FREEZE for at least 12-14 hours so it is completely frozen. This will ensure being able to frost the cake. DON’T try to skip this part. You will have a mess!

Once all of your cakes are frozen and your 2 batches of butter cream frosting are made, you are ready to “build” your cake.

With a bread knife, slice of the “tops” of your rounded cake layer to make it flat.

Once each layer has a flat top, you can begin frosting your Rustic Naked Cake.

Continue your process until you get to the top. Frost the cake top with just the butter cream frosting.

Now you can “frost” the sides with little to no frosting. It is your creation. Whatever you like is perfect.

Add the fresh flowers, berries and leaves (All washed) of your choice to create a cake top.

The fun thing about this process is that your cake layers have thawed out by now. AND the flavors of the butter cream frosting and raspberry jam have blended together.

Hi Meegan, I’ve been admiring this “naked cake” trend for a little while and yours is just beautiful.

Love all the pretty flowers and the minimalist frosting is so much better than piling it on.

    Lovely pictures too.

    Happy Easter!

Your cake is so pretty! Love the layers and that it has less frosting than a regular cake. I may ake this for Mothers Day this year! My MIL would love it! Pinning!
