Make Ahead Christmas Cookies

October 10, 2026 By Meegan Leave a Comment

It’s been years and years that I have been making plans for baking cookies well ahead of Christmas.

When my husband was a sales rep for several furniture companies, he would hand deliver plates of these baked goods every year. It was a fun tradition. Starting in October, his customers would be asking, “is your wife baking her Christmas cookies THIS year?” And the cookie baking list would begin.

The recipes I have collected and chosen to share with you are some of the BEST Make Ahead Christmas Cookies you can find. That’s not just my opinion, but of many others, as well.

In order to have enough time and cookies for family, friends, neighbors, plus my husband’s customers I would have to start making cookie dough and baking well in advance. Usually in the beginning of October.

BEST TIPS & TRICKS:

*You can make the cookie dough, shape it into a disk shape (as suggested by THE Martha Stewart), place in a ziplock bag. And store the dough in your freezer until you are ready to bake your cookies.

*Another way to prepare ahead of time is to bake your cookies as the recipe instructs. Then carefully stack baked cookies in a gallon sized ziplock bag. Store in your freezer until needed. Being careful not to break or crack your cookies.

*When ready for gift giving, take your ziplock bags out of the freezer. Cookies can be thawed in OR out of the bags. Whatever is best for you. So they don’t break, carefully place each cookie on your counter, on a pretty plate or in a beautiful box.

*As far as the frosted cookies, frost them after they are thawed out. This is speaking from experience. Then cookies and frosting don’t get “glued together” and look much nicer.

*The ball cookies rolled in granulated or powdered sugar can be rolled after baking and before freezing. And if desired-roll in preferred sugar again after thawing out. This is completely up to you and what YOU prefer.

These make ahead methods can save you A LOT of time. Especially when you are busy working, decorating your tree, trying to shop and wrap presents.

There are many cookie flavors and methods to choose from, so let’s get started.

Another great thing about these Make Ahead Christmas Cookies is that they are made from scratch. What could be any better for Christmas/Holiday gift giving?

I hope you will try and bake at least a few of these easy, quick and freezable cookie recipes this season. Let me know what you think.

Make it a wonderful day!
